Memorial Funds At Work
The Memorial Committee is pleased to announce a number of
projects that have been accomplished through the use of memorial funds.
Organ Pipe Cleaning
New Computer and Monitor for Church Office
Campus Signage for Visitors and Newcomers
Landscaping Bark and Shrubs
In addition, Memorial Funds were able to compliment a generous gift by
Susan and Ray Barmer in memory of Susan’s mother to provide new pew
cushions for the sanctuary.
We can be proud of these improvements that show the love for those in
whose memory contributions were made.
CONSECRATION SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8
Make
plans to join us next Sunday, November 8, with Barbara Campbell Davis
from New Hope Presbytery as she leads our congregation in worship at
11:00 AM. Make reservations for the Celebration Breakfast at 9:30 AM by
contacting the church office, 537-4018.
The Witness Committee
Once
again we have the opportunity to take part in
Operation Christmas Child.
This is a project of Samaritan’s Purse which in 2008, distributed more
than 7.9 million gift filled shoe boxes to children in 100 countries.
In each
entry (narthex) of the church or in the church office, you will find a
folder that contains all the information needed to pack a shoebox. If
you have questions, please call Lee Cranford or the church office.
Along with the folder you will find a prayer guide. We ask that you
pray for the children receiving the boxes, their families and those who
work distributing boxes.
Please
pack your gifts in regular size shoe boxes or in a plastic box (only
shoe box size), include a check for $7.00 in the envelope provided and
bring to the church office by Friday, November 13. (There are also
empty shoe boxes in the church office which you may use). The boxes
will then be taken to the East 10th Street Church of Christ which is
serving as the collection center for this area.
This is
a wonderful ministry and another way we can be the hands and feet of
Christ.
Jane
and Lee have been in touch with Rev. Dr. Donald Marsden who serves on
the staff of Presbyterian Frontier Fellowship. He visited with us in
January, 2009 and shared his mission experience in Russia and Siberia.
He will be with us again January 10, 2010. Plans for his participation
in the worship service and Sunday School will be completed as we get
closer to that date.

Greetings from your local American Red
Cross! We are holding a fall Campaign called
“Give 5 to Save Lives” to
benefit our local
Chapter.
The concept of the campaign is
simple: if we all give at least $5 to support the Red Cross, imagine
what a difference we can make. As emergency responders, Red Cross
volunteers often witness the needs of fire and disaster victims within
our community. Our Red Cross never hesitates to respond to these
needs. Money raised from the auction will:
• Provide assistance for disaster
victims
• Support efforts of blood
collection
• Help train individuals to
practice lifesaving CPR and First Aid
• Enable the communication of
emergency messages to our Armed Forces
All auction proceeds will benefit the
American Red Cross Frederick E. Turnage Chapter, and will stay within
our community to assist local residents. Our Tax ID is 53-0196605.
Should you have any questions or like
more information, please do not hesitate to contact me at (252) 977-1720
or
Kristen@TurnageRedCross.org.
Every Donation Helps and Will Stay Within Your Community!
•
$5 will provide 1
comfort kit with toiletries for disaster victims
•
$15 will provide
1 first aid kit
•
$20 will
communicate an emergency message to military personnel
•

Corri Knudson Wins
In the
world of Tennessee Walking Horses, there is an 11-day event in
Shelbyville, TN held annually since 1939 called the Celebration.
Shelbyville is a small town about an hour south of Nashville and the
size of Roanoke Rapids. The Celebration is held on a 100+ acre complex
which includes a 30,000 seat stadium, a 4500 seat indoor arena,
permanent stalls for over 1,600 horses and campgrounds for more than 350
RV’s (quite an impressive complex).
Corri
has been riding horses since she was about eight. In her sophomore year
at UNC Greensboro, the opportunity arose for her to take a sabbatical
from school, move to Shelbyville and train for the Celebration. Since
last March, she has been living in an apartment in Shelbyville,
supporting herself as a waitress at Ruby Tuesdays and training for the
Celebration. She does have a dog to keep her company.
Noreen
and I went to the Celebration to watch her and many other riders compete
in our first Celebration experience. Tuesday, September 1, was her
night to compete. There were fifteen riders all decked out in formal
riding attire and all appearing older than Corri. Fourteen riders
entered the ring, there was a pause, and then came Corri riding in on
Keepers (formal name “9 in the Sky”). The riders rounded the ring,
first one way, and then the other following the ring master’s
instructions, with the horses displaying their distinctive
high-in-the-air front-foot gaits. Corri sure looked good (of course she
would to us). When it was over, all riders lined up with some 20,000 in
paid attendance anticipating the results. The announcement came loud
and clear—Corri’s name was called! She is the World Champion in the
“Amateur Rider on Two-year old Mares or Geldings” Class. I can’t begin
to describe how excited and proud we all were. During her victory lap,
after talking about Corri Knudson from Roanoke Rapids, NC, they played
Nothing Could be Finer then to be in Carolina.
It was really quite a special experience.
Corri
continues to live in Shelbyville, working at Ruby Tuesday’s, still
training and is starting school this fall. Her Email address is cmk3p@mtsu.org.

CODY UPDATE
Since my last email things have gotten a
little busier. I got the day off since I worked the weekend. This past
weekend the united nations and some of the ambassadors in cabo verde
came to the park. A UN program is what funded and started the park. We
took them to an area where they got to plant some trees and then went on
a hike to the campsite. I got to meet the US ambassador and talk with
her a little bit. Last weekend I went hiking through part of the park
and buffer-zone and went through one of the agricultural valleys where
they have lots of fruit trees and sugar cane. At work I have gotten to
visit an association and other villagers who receive microcredit to
start up small businesses. Right now corn and squash is being harvested
so I eats lots of it. Its not a day in cabo verde without several ears
of corn on the cob. Everywhere you go people are friendly and give you
corn to eat. I went to a neighbors house and he gave me milk straight
from the cow. I couldn't be rude so I had to drink it all. Luckily my
stomach was able to handle it. Another neighbor started a pig
butchering business so every Sunday there is fresh pork rinds to be
eaten. November 1st is all Saints Day so there will probably be lots of
festas and celebrations. Tomorrow I think I'm headed to the capital for
an environmental conference on biodiversity. At least that’s how I
interpreted what my boss said. Take Care!

Betty and
Bob Pearce recently enjoyed an afternoon visit and dinner with
David McDonald who was returning from a week of continuing
education at Union/PSCE in Richmond. I thought many of you would
enjoy knowing what's going on with the McDonald clan. Bob
Pearce reported: David, Stacey, Ella & Harper Kate are doing
well in Raleigh. And Abraham, Christy, Jacob and Emily are also
doing well in Rocky Mount. David McDonald said that Yvonne was
doing well after being the innocent victim in a four-car
accident; they now have a new car. But he talked most about Beth
who is a high school sophomore excelling, as expected, at
academics and sports. She has reinjured her knee; David hopes it
does not require further surgery. Her photos show her to be a
quite lovely young lady. David’s health has improved to the
point that he has resumed running. His Wilmington church is
about the same size as ours. They recently dedicated a new
organ. We caught him up with church and local news. He sends his
best wishes to all. |
The
Presby-kids that are singing with the Adult Choir November 22 will have
practice Wednesday’s at 6:00PM in the Choir Room, November 4, 11, and

Stewardship Committee
Consecration Sunday will be November 8, 2009. There will be breakfast in
the Loy Memorial Building at 9:30 AM with food provided by members of the
congregation. Barbara Campbell Davis, Executive Presbyter of New Hope
Presbytery, will give the Stewardship Surgeon at the 11:00 AM service.
Barbara
visited with the Stewardship Committee, Elders and Preschool teachers for
lunch on Wednesday, October 21 to make plans for Consecration Sunday, and we
learned she has a background in Stewardship. We had a pleasant visit and we
look forward to her time with us later.
The
Stewardship Committee hopes that in the time remaining that you will give
prayerful thought to how God has blessed you, what your church means to you
and your family and the degree to which you will offer support with your
money, time, talent and prayers.

Tree Farmers of the Year, Riddick & Alice Ricks

Last week we traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC
for both the annual NC American Tree Farm meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday.
On Thursday and Friday we attended the annual NC Forestry Association
meeting. We were treated very special at both groups. In Alice's words,
"We were treated like royalty". Alice and I are still overwhelmed by the
week and our presentation at both associational meetings as 2009 NC Tree
Farmers of the Year. During the presentation by Dr. Bob and Jean Cooper,
the 2008 National Tree Farmers of the Year, we were pleased that daddy,
Phillip, Ben and Will were recognized in regard to their help, encouragement
and partnership in relation to our family operation. It was truly presented
as a family accomplishment After the award was presented, I was able to
share with the group our forestry and wildlife experience, our appreciation
of those who have been instrumental in assisting us, and our belief that God
has blessed us and placed us in a position to be responsible managers of a
small section of His land. We received a standing ovation which was a very
humbling experience for us. We were placed in nomination for the Southern
Regional Tree Farmers of the Year..... so keep your fingers crossed!.
God's blessings abound
in our lives, Riddick
