First Presbyterian Church Preschool Handbook 2007-2008

First Presbyterian Church Preschool was organized in 1985 in order to provide a structured learning experience for preschool age children in a Christian environment.  The curriculum is intended to promote self-confidence, independent thinking, sociability, responsibility, and creativity, using “play” the universal learning medium.

Policies, Rules and Regulations

1.   The Monday and Wednesday 2 year old classes meet from 9:00 until 11:00. The 3 year old morning class meets Tuesday & Thursday from 8:30 until 11:00, and afternoon 3 year old classes meet Tuesday & Thursday from 12 Noon until 2:30. It is important that children are picked up on time. A charge of up to $10.00 may be assessed if this is not done. Some 4 year old children may be admitted to the 3 year old class.

2.  Age qualifications require that the birthday be reached by October 15.

3.  Children must be toilet trained for the three year class.

4.  Class size will be 15 maximum and will be staffed by a teacher and an assistant for the 3 year old classes. Class size for 2 year olds will be a maximum of 9, also staffed by a teacher and an assistant.

5.  The School Calendar and Handbook will be presented for review at orientation.

6.  The Preschool is financed through tuition.  First Presbyterian Church provides support through the use of its facilities, clerical assistance, and administration and oversight by church volunteers.

7.  Fees include a nonrefundable registration of $50.00 and tuition of $75 per month for three-year-olds. Tuition for the two-year-old class is 50.00 per month. Tuition is due with registration and is refundable only until June 30.  Thereafter, tuition is due by the 10th of the month.

8.  A $25.00 fee will be assessed for returned checks.

9.  Tuition is not transferable.

Registration
and Admission

1.     Registration will begin early spring, with priority given to children of church members.

2.  A new registration form and fee will be required each year.

3.  When classes are full, a waiting list will be established.

4.  Should problems or conflict arise that cannot be resolved by teachers, students and/or parents, there will be review by the Preschool Administer and the Board of Directors.

5. The Preschool reserves the right to refuse registration.  Refusal will not be based on race, religion, or national origin.

Withdrawal

The Preschool reserves the right to demand withdrawal of a student if it determines that the school cannot meet that student’s needs, in which case, unused tuition will be refunded.  In cases of voluntary withdrawal, all paid tuition will be forfeited.

Grievances

Parents with questions, problems or grievances should present them first to their child’s teacher and then to the Preschool Administer.  If satisfaction is not achieved appearance before the Board may be requested.

Conferences

Teachers will give progress reports in the form of notes, telephone calls, and/or conferences.  Parents or teachers may initiate conferences.  The type and frequency of these communications may from class to class and from teacher to teacher.

Health
and Safety

2.  The Preschool staff should be made aware of health problems that may affect your child or others in the school.  (Examples: seizure disorders, asthma, medications that cause drowsiness, exposures to communicable diseases.)

3.  Dress appropriately for outside play.

4.  In case of accidents or injury, first aid will be administered and families will be notified.

5.  In case of emergencies, 911 will be called and/or families notified.  Preschool staff can not transport to a medical facility.

          16 East 5th Street
          Roanoke Rapids, NC   27870

2.     Telephone: 537-4018 rings the church office.  Please do not call during school hours unless there is an urgent problem.  Teachers may be contacted prior to 8:30 AM or between 11:30 AM and 12:00 in the afternoon.  There is an answering machine for your convenience.

3.  Please notify the Preschool of any change in address or telephone numbers.

Personal
Belongings

1. Children are asked not to bring toys, candy, gum, etc. unless teachers request items for Show and Tell.

2. Children should be dressed simply, comfortably, and sensibly for play.  Shoes should have non-slide bottoms.  Flip-flops are not acceptable, as they are dangerous when using outdoor play equipment.

3. Label clothes plainly.

Your
Child

Allow time for adjustment to the new experience of preschool.  A good nights sleep helps.  Be positive and on time.  Parents should not linger.  Trust the Preschool staff to help with the adjustment period.

Parental
Involvement

1.   Do not hesitate to express concern or to ask questions of your child’s teacher.

2.  Volunteer to assist as a substitute or help with special events, snacks, etc.

3.  Visits to the classroom are welcomed, but do not bring other children.  Watch your child grow ability to follow directions and work with the group.  It will be helpful if your teacher knows in advance if you plan to visit in case some special event is planned for that day.

4.  Birthdays are special and are celebrated with a party and special snacks.  Parents will be asked to help with these events.  Gifts are not exchanged, and party favors are not necessary.  A neat way to celebrate is for the Birthday Child to donate a book to the class in honor of the child’s birthday.

5.  Field trips are planned from time-to-time.  These may be walking trips or outings such as a visit to the pumpkin farm.  Parents will be notified in advance of these events and may be asked to help with transportation and supervision. A permission slip will need to be filled out prior to the trip.
