Worship Committee

The Worship Committee is a session committee, and its chairman and vice-chairman are to be members of the session.  The committee should have a minimum membership of 15 and may have representatives from the session, board of deacons and at-large church members.

The general responsibilities of the committee are to oversee regular and special worship services, musical ministry, ushering, funerals and anything else that relates to the continuing worship of the congregation.  At the beginning of each year the committee should evaluate the work done toward goals set the previous year and set new goals.

The committee is to be organized into subcommittees with the following responsibilities:

1.  Sunday Worship Assistance

  • Work with the pastor to seek ways to make the regular and special worship services even more reverent, meaningful and beautiful.
  • Oversee the taping of Sunday worship services, duplicating and delivery of the tapes to shut-ins.
  • Secure layperson willing to assist in filling the pulpit when the minister is away. This occurs normally 4 Sundays each year and usually requires 3 to 4 persons for each service.
  • Make monthly greeter assignments for both the Fifth Street and Roanoke Avenue entrances.  The greeter assigned to the Roanoke Avenue entrance should be an elder, and he I she should attend this door at the close of the service.
  • Secure lay participants when the minister wishes help during the service for the children92s sermon or the Old Testament scripture reading.
  • Make sure that the paraments displayed are of the color specified by the church calendar. A copy of the church calendar is attached to the top of the storage box in the choir room.
  • Make sure that the guest sign-up booklets at each pew have blank sheets.  Additional copies of the sign-up sheet may be made in the church office.
  • Periodically check to make sure that the sanctuary pews are properly equipped with Bibles and hymnals.
  • Make periodic checks of the receivers for the hearing impaired to insure that they are in good working condition.
  • Secure families to provide after service refreshments during the summer time.
  • Oversee the ordering of candles for the brass candlesticks used in the sanctuary.
  • Make sure the baptismal fount is filled with water when there is to be a baptism.
  • Prepare a schedule for Communion preparation by an elder.  The elder responsible for the preparation is to go with the pastor to serve the sacraments to the shut-ins.  Directions for preparation of the bread, wafers, juice and cloths are posted on the door of the sink in the Sacristy.  Sally Ray Warren will provide the small loaf of bread used in the Communion service.  A schedule of those to prepare Communion should he mailed to Sally Ray.
  • Recommend for session approval alternative times for worship service during the summer time.

2.  Music

  • Oversee the purchase of music for the choir with the choir director within budget constraints.
  • Work with the choir director to recruit new choir members and be attentive to the needs of the choir.
  • Plan and carry out an annual Choir Appreciation event.
  • Secure the director and director assistants for the children’s choir and be available to provide assistance to the director.

3.  Ushering

  • Make assignments for ushering duties for all regular services and those special services where needed.  Maintain, and update, as needed, the ushering responsibility list.
  • Make Sunday morning checks of the church campus to see that the proper doors are unlocked, proper lights are on and the heating or air conditionings are functioning.  After the service reverse the procedure.  The initial check should be made prior to 9:00 AM

4.  Special Worship Service

  • Coordinate special worship service with the pastor for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas Eve and Lenten services.

5.  Weddings

  • Work with prospective brides, making sure they have a copy of the Wedding Guidelines.  Be available to assist with any questions the bride or her director may have.
  • Make sure that a Wedding Coordinator is available for each wedding held in the sanctuary.

6.  Funerals

  • Arrange for ushering as required.  Check to see that the sanctuary is tidy and the heating / air conditioning system is properly set.
  • Make certain that the paraments displayed are white.
  • See that the pall is available if it is to be used, and make sure that it is returned to storage after the funeral service.
  • Provide information to the funeral director as needed.
